About the stadium

Opened in 1966 in southern Mexico City at an elevation of 2,240 metres. Home of Club America (Liga MX) and the Mexico national team. It was the first stadium ever to host two World Cup finals, in 1970 and 1986. Its pitch staged two of football's defining moments: Diego Maradona's "Goal of the Century" and "Hand of God" in the 1986 quarterfinal against England, and the "Game of the Century," Italy 4-3 West Germany in the 1970 semifinal. Long known as Estadio Azteca, the venue was renamed Estadio Banorte in 2025 to fund renovations. At the 2026 World Cup it hosts the opening match on June 11 (Mexico vs South Africa), becoming the first ground in history to stage a World Cup opener three times. Five matches in total: four group games and a Round of 32 tie. It operates as Estadio Ciudad de Mexico during the tournament.
