About the city
Mexico City is the capital of Mexico and the largest city in North America, with a metro population of about 22 million at an elevation of 2,240 metres. World Cup 2026 opens here on 11 June with Mexico vs South Africa at Estadio Azteca (renamed Banorte Stadium, ~87,000 seats), the only venue to have staged two World Cup finals, in 1970 and 1986, both featuring Brazil and Argentina respectively. The stadium is home to Club América, Liga MX's record title-holder, and the national team. A 2024-2026 renovation raised capacity from 83,000 to 87,500. The airport is Benito Juárez International (MEX). High altitude and thin air are a factor for visiting teams.
