About the city
Monterrey is the capital of Nuevo León, Mexico's third-largest city with a metro population of about 5.4 million and the country's main industrial centre. World Cup 2026 matches are held at Estadio BBVA in the suburb of Guadalupe (renamed Monterrey Stadium, ~53,000 seats, opened 2015), home of Liga MX club Monterrey (Rayados), four-time league champions. The nickname "El Gigante de Acero" references the city's steel industry. The stadium will stage four matches: three group games and one knockout fixture. The airport is Monterrey International (MTY). June weather is hot and dry at 30-35 °C; the city sits in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Oriental.
