About the city
Houston is the fourth-largest city in the United States and the largest in Texas, with a metro population of about 7.5 million. World Cup 2026 matches are held at NRG Stadium (~72,000 seats, retractable roof, opened 2002), home of the Houston Texans (NFL). The city also fields the Astros (MLB), Rockets (NBA) and MLS side Houston Dynamo, which plays at the separate Shell Energy Stadium. NRG hosted Super Bowl LI and the NCAA football championship game. The main airport is George Bush Intercontinental (IAH), a United Airlines hub. June-July weather is extremely humid, around 33 °C at humidity above 80%, which makes the retractable roof essential.
